1. Welcome to Philosophy of Film online
Some of the most exciting philosophical questions are prompted by the way we engage with films. As film viewers, we can gain a great deal by reflecting philosophically both on what we see on the screen and on our own reactions to film.
In this course we will use this philosophical reflection to illuminate our imaginative engagement with films, our emotional responses to their characters and events, and what to do when faced with different interpretations of the same film. We shall see how the capacity of films to represent fictional scenarios is restricted and influenced by a diverse range of factors, from our moral judgments to the metaphysics of the world we live in.
Here’s a demo made to show you what an online seminar will look like. In this video I’m talking about the identity of characters across films. It should give you a flavour of what it’s like studying philosophy of film at ICE.

2. Creative writing: an introduction to life writing
This course is for anyone who wants to write a biography, memoir or other form of non-fiction. It will use examples and practical exercises to guide students through the skills needed to write interesting non-fiction: research, editing, how to tell a story and ways of using description.
In
this online taster we will look at how two authors approached writing
about someone’s life. In the first example the author discusses writing a
biography of a famous person and in the second case the writer talks
about recording her own life in the form of a memoir. We will also
consider the dilemmas you may encounter in your own writing.
